Art Vox at Market is our engaging programme of curated conversations highlighting interesting topics, change makers and current issues on the Nordic art scene. Join us for an engaging programme at the fair over the weekend.

Highlights include, Jockum Nordström & Tal R in conversation, BMW share the role cultural engagement plays in their work. Panel discussions consider physical print in the digital era, the Swedish art scene’s infrastructure support…and what might be lacking, and professional insight from the new director of Liljevalchs.

Gain international perspectives from curators working in Istanbul, and hear fresh ideas from rising stars participating in Market Debut, in conversation with the editor of Vogue Scandinavia.

    Where East Meets West - Four Contemporary Art Institutions from Istanbul

    Four art institutions from Istanbul talk about their current activities and reflect on the cultural field in Turkey. Selen Ansen, Senior Curator at Arter, Çelenk Bafra, Director of SAHA, a studio and residency programme in Istanbul, Elif Kamisli, Exhibition Manager of the Istanbul Biennale and Öykü Özsoy, Chief Curator at Istanbul Modern.

    Moderated by Mike Bode, Counsellor for Cultural Affairs, Consulate General of Sweden in Istanbul

    Balancing act: cultural engagement

    BMW is a globally recognised brand that is a major catalyst for and promoter of art. Prof. Dr Thomas Girst has led BMW cultural engagement for twenty years and will share how BMW balances their support for art with their role as a multinational brand, honoring and crediting art for its own value.

    Born in 1971, Girst studied art history, American Studies and German literature at Hamburg University and New York University. Previously head of the Art Science Research Laboratory at Harvard University, Girst has been the global Head of Cultural Engagement at the BMW Group for 20 years. He was awarded “European Cultural Manager of the Year ', lectures internationally and has published widely. In 2023 Cultural Management: A Global Guide will be published by Thames & Hudson.

    Two contemporary artists with common ground:

    Jockum Nordström & Tal R have parallel careers as internationally acclaimed artists, with touchpoints of common ground between them. Join us as, for the first time, these two major stars of the contemporary art scene share the stage for a unique dialogue.

    Both artists have been exhibited internationally and are at the center of their respective local art scenes in Denmark and Sweden.

    Tal R, a contemporary painter and sculptor, was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1967, he moved to Copenhagen, Denmark with his family when he was one year old.

    Jockum Nordström, an interdisciplinary artist, was born in 1963 and grew up in Stockholm where he still resides.

    New director forging a new vision

    The recently appointed director of Liljevalchs, will share professional insight from their career and how this will shape their vision for Liljevalchs going forward

    Joanna Sandell is a curator, writer and museum director of Liljevalchs konsthall. She has specialised in revitalising art institutions and previously worked at Botkyrka konsthall and Kalmar konstmuseum. She is also the co-founder of The Mirror Institution.

    The Infrastructure of Art

    Insight into the work environment, conditions and context of art scene actors.

    Bildkonst Sverige organisation will present their report examining how art scene actors have been neglected throughout many years of cultural policy.

    Panelists include Magdalena Malm, director Bildkonst Sverige and Tessa Praun, museum director Magasin III and member of the board Bildkonst Sverige. Further panelists to be announced.

    Publishing in the digital age

    What role does art print and independent publishing play today? Nuda cultural publication has invited select Scandinavian independent publicists to discuss the conditions for print in the digital age. The panel will discuss their different approaches, printmaking as curation, and the true meaning of the physical object.

    Nuda is a biannual hardcover publication, exploring broad themes through incursions into the worlds of art, fashion, design, philosophy and science. With its fun, informed and diversified attitude towards the burning questions of our lives, Nuda has grown to become one of most relevant cultural publications emerging from Scandinavia. Nuda is run by photographer Frida Vega Salomonsson and art-critic Nora Arrhenius Hagdahl.

    Introducing…Market Debut Artists

    Explore Market Debut through the lens of fashion and art. Meet rising stars of the Nordic art scene in conversation with Allyson Shiffman print editor of Vogue Scandinavia.

    Allyson Shiffman is a Canadian writer and editor residing in Stockholm and is currently the print editor of Vogue Scandinavia. She has contributed to publications such Interview, V and W, where she frequently profiled emerging and established artists.

    Market Debut is a new section that exclusively focuses on up-and-coming talent making waves on the Nordic artscene today. This ambitious section showcases thirteen bold artists represented by seven galleries new to Market Art Fair, from four countries.
