-A perfect Tipping Point

About the original Sculpture

Tipping Point (2021) is a large kinetic sculpture, sited on the floor of a darkened room. The mobile comprises various rotating rocker arms, onto which platforms and counterweights are hung.

These platforms are occupied by actors whose movements set the mobile rocking; the counterweights consist of a slowly melting iceberg and a black sphere. The people moving on the platforms assume different roles;

The weather god plays on an old theatrical machine once used to simulate the sounds of weather such as storms and rain on stage. The meteorologist, placed in the centre of a satellite dish, collects information about tomorrow through various weather instruments.

On one platform that has a root system on its underside, someone is swirling through a flag dance, and on a rocky formation in a diorama-like cross-section of the wilds, an orienteer is sitting listening to the weather forecast.

The installation weighs four metric tons and measures seven meters tall. Tipping Point is a collaboration between Bigert & Bergström and researchers from the Institute for Futures Studies (IFFS) within the framework of the research program Climate Ethics and Future Generations.

Tipping Point is a larger than life sculpture from 2021. In a team effort it has successfully been converted into a perfect miniature version.

“The making of a room adapted version and finding a way to permanently display an important and impressive sculpture was a year long working project.”

The art of scaling down

Art Vox teamed up with with Bigert & Bergström and formed a plan to make their piece at an accessible scale. The accuracy in the model has been aided by adjustments in the original drawings.These alterations are made by Albin Lenéll (3D Modulation) and Lars Hässler (Cad Modulation).

Once the virtual sketch up was made, an in depth study was commenced to meet the artist duo standardsThe challenge was to make a small format version without compromising any of the detailing when scaling down from meters to millimeters. The project set off on a new route to explore material choice, processing and finish in order to result in an as exact replica as possible, although the scale sometimes made it harder to solve than the original Tipping Point.
